In New Jersey, they do not recognize what is known as legal separation. Many states do but New Jersey does not. However, many people are able to enter into property settlement agreements or marital settlement agreements that resolve all the issues of their marriage and they live under the terms of these agreements. However, when it comes to tax filing status or other legal avenues where they determine your status, you are still married in the State of New Jersey until a final judgment of divorce is entered.
