If your spouse suffers from substance abuse or alcoholism, they still have the right to see the children. Of course, this is a stressful situation for the children and the other parent, but legally the parent with addiction issues still has rights despite their struggles. It is understandable that one parent wants to protect their children from the other and wants to do what they can to make sure the children are not put in danger.

However, there are protections that you can implement to ensure that your children are not at risk. The court will order supervised parenting time. This can take place in the courthouse with a court appointed supervisor or, preferably, they can go with a family member who is willing to oversee the parenting time and make sure the children are safe.
